Aaron will need to be fitted for new prosthetics
approximately 3 - 4 times per year. As Aaron is now Four,
it is envisaged that he will need 42-56 pairs of prosthetics
while he grows over the next 14 years. Aaron could quite easily
grow to a height in excess of 6ft, as he is quite tall already
and his father reached 6 feet, 4 inches at age 16.
We have been advised that with modern technology, there
is pretty much nothing that cannot be made, therefore nothing
Aaron can not do, providing his trust account is sufficient
to cover the excess costs involved.
The very helpful staff in the prosthetic department at the
Canberra Hospital is researching the possible needs and technology
available specifically for children. As few of the Hospitals
amputee clients are children, and even fewer candidates of
bi-lateral amputation (both feet), the hospital staff are
liaising with other hospitals and specialist to ascertain
the best options for Aaron's mobility and independence.
As the whole family also share a love of sports, Aaron's parents
will be in contact with the Australian Institute of Sport
to gain experiential and practical advice from staff who work
specifically with children who have disabilities.
As more research is done and more specialists contacted, we
will be able to provide a clearer picture of Aaron's rehabilitation
and technological needs for the future. We'll keep you posted.
In order for Aaron to lead as active a life as possible he
will need special prosthetics. For ankle mobility needed for
sports, or waterproof prosthetics for swimming, an excess
of approximately $2000.00 per pair is expected.
