Gay Emmerson graduated from Canberra School of Art in 1979, specialising in painting. Her lifelong fascination with land, sea and sky is reflected not just in the subject matter of her works, but also in her constant experimentation with technique and media to express the many facets of landscape.

Gay also paints people; her occasional portraits and figure studies have a sense of time and place, and her life drawings often evoke the curves and lines of the Australian landscape which she knows so well.
