THOMAS GRAHAM:
Loving brother, bachelor, doctor, sailor, poet, artist, reformer, protector
and carer of the Irish poor during the Great Famine.
Born in Ecclefechan,
southern Scotland, in 1818; Graduated both from the Royal College of Surgeons
and Edinburgh University as an M.D. in 1838; Entered Royal Navy as an
Additional Assistant Surgeon on 2nd January 1841; Appointed Surgeon June
1850; Died Whampoa, China, July 1850.
The youngest of eleven children, son of a merchant and orphaned at the
age of 8. Raised by his devoted sister Catherine, some 20 years his senior,
who was the Postmistress al Ecclefechan, and who remained there until
her death in 1866.
Thomas was a diarist from the time of his entry into the Royal Navy until
his death from Malaria in 1850. He corresponded weekly with Catherine
and maintained contacts with many of his Naval colleagues, as well as
with other relatives.
I have several hundred documents obtained over the past 25 years, either
written by, to or concerning Thomas. These items are in addition to three
diaries now held by The Wellcome Trust in London, and another held by
The Fryer Library, at The University of Queensland in Brisbane.
THIS SITE
IS ESTABLISHED AS A MEANS OF LOCATING MORE OF THOMAS'S WRITINGS, AND AS
A MEDIUM FOR EXCHANGE OF INFORMATION WITH OTHERS.
It is my, intention to write Thomas's story
to preserve his memory, honour his life and allow others to share his
thoughts, feelings, ideas and observations. For the Draft Preface and
