THOMAS GRAHAM: Loving brother, bachelor, doctor, sailor, poet, artist, reformer, protector and carer of the Irish poor during the Great Famine.

Born in Ecclefechan, southern Scotland, in 1818; Graduated both from the Royal College of Surgeons and Edinburgh University as an M.D. in 1838; Entered Royal Navy as an Additional Assistant Surgeon on 2nd January 1841; Appointed Surgeon June 1850; Died Whampoa, China, July 1850.

The youngest of eleven children, son of a merchant and orphaned at the age of 8. Raised by his devoted sister Catherine, some 20 years his senior, who was the Postmistress al Ecclefechan, and who remained there until her death in 1866.

Thomas was a diarist from the time of his entry into the Royal Navy until his death from Malaria in 1850. He corresponded weekly with Catherine and maintained contacts with many of his Naval colleagues, as well as with other relatives.

I have several hundred documents obtained over the past 25 years, either written by, to or concerning Thomas. These items are in addition to three diaries now held by The Wellcome Trust in London, and another held by The Fryer Library, at The University of Queensland in Brisbane.

THIS SITE IS ESTABLISHED AS A MEANS OF LOCATING MORE OF THOMAS'S WRITINGS, AND AS A MEDIUM FOR EXCHANGE OF INFORMATION WITH OTHERS.

It is my, intention to write Thomas's story to preserve his memory, honour his life and allow others to share his thoughts, feelings, ideas and observations. For the Draft Preface and chapters 1 and 2. (see * attached)
